From Island Peak, we headed back over to the Khumbu Glacier's valley and Kala Pattar as described earlier and, from there, back down to Tengboche, Namche Bazaar, and Lukla. Tengboche offers spectacular views of Everest, the Lhotse face, Thamserku, Kangtaiga, and the everpresent Ama Dablam. It's also the site of a famous gompa (or Buddhist monastery) which has been recently rebuilt. In 1989, less than a year after installing electricity, an overturned electrical heater burned the gompa to the ground. Tengboche can apparently be rather crowded during peak season since it's a favorite destination for shorter treks out of Namche Bazaar. However, our return was late in the trekking season so we had the place largely to ourselves. |
