To let you know a little bit about myself, I've attended various schools in the Northeast with an SB in Mechanical Engineering from MIT, an ME from the Thayer School of Engineering at Dartmouth College, and an MBA from the Johnson Graduate School of Management at Cornell University. I was a product manager for Data General for about 13 years and handled most every sort of server hardware the comapny made from the mid-eighties until its acquisition and dissolution by EMC. Outside of my "real" job I rode the crest of the DOS shareware wave with my Directory Freedom software, one of the most widely-used file managers of the pre-Windows era. Both the binaries and sources for my Directory Freedom software are available in the Bit Masons section of this site as is miscellaneous other software that I have written. Data General's old domain is no longer active; the most comprehensive legacy Data General site out there seems to be Simulogics. After close to ten years as an industry analyst, mostly at Illuminata, I have now moved back to the vendor side where I am Senior Marketing Strategy and Evangelism Manager at Red Hat.

I've traveled around a bit; quite a few photographs and some possibly interesting travelogue are displayed elsewhere on these pages. This travel is often combined with various types of outdoor activities such as hiking and sea kayaking. As you may gather from the photographs, I generally consider large amounts of snow and cold a good thing rather than the opposite when I'm pursuing said activities. Locally, I spend time up in the White Mountains of New Hampshire and am a leader for the Appalachian Mountain Club.

I try to spend some time reading and have fairly elcectic (some would say weird) tastes. Science Fiction is one genre I enjoy; you can see what my favorites are here. My (modest) response to the American Film Institute's (AFI) 100 Greatest American films is here. Other interests such as brewing beer and cooking aren't that well represented on these pages yet. When I have time I'll be adding some cooking and brewing recipes and techniques. These pages also contain miscellaneous other writings and musings including an unpublished book of quotations extracted from a series of newspaper and magazine columns from the early to mid-eighties.

I live in an 1823 farmhouse in Lancaster, MA which is about as rural as things get in this area of Massachusetts. A few photos are below:
